FORT MYERS, Fla - Quality Life Center and the children who attend its afterschool programs are excited about their new computer lab.
On Wednesday, GTECH Corporation and the Florida Lottery launched the After School Advantage computer center at The Q. The new computer lab is the 18th in the state of Florida that GTECH and the Florida Lottery have gifted to a non-profit after school program like Quality Life Center.
The computer lab will provide local youth with essential computer skills and homework assistance during the critical after-school hours. As part of the $15,000 donation, GTECH provided the Quality Life Center with 12 Dell desktop wireless computers, 12 student workstations, 12 chairs, a wireless printer, a wireless router, decorative artwork and a variety of educational and creative software. These resources will be used year-round by over 200 students during the Quality Life Center’s after school program and its summer and winter camps.
Councilman Johnny Streets says, “When I was an officer, this corner didn't have what is going on here now. There were no kids. There was no learning. There were no arts programs and definitely no computer lab. Now, look at what is happening here. Kids are learning. They have a safe environment that nourishes them. They have role models that support them. They are thriving and it shows in the young people that I see all around here,”
“Technological advancements are being made every day,” said Mr. Abdul Haq Muhammed, Founder and Executive Director at Quality Life Center. “It is important that our youth are exposed to these new technologies in order to keep up with the world around them. We can’t thank GTECH enough, not only for their generous donation, but for being committed to educating our youth, for believing that our children should come first and for their commitment to closing the digital divide. Thanks to GTECH, the youth in our community now have the opportunity to explore more, learn more and become more.”
