TALLAHASSEE, Fla - (AP) Florida has just hired a new education commissioner, Gerard Robinson, and is paying him $275,000, which is one of the highest salaries in state government.
But the state is also paying John Winn, the interim commissioner who briefly took over for Robinson this summer. Winn - who already collects a $10,000 monthly retirement payment from the state - is now a senior policy advisor with the Department of Education on a temporary basis but he could earn as much as $228,000 a year.
The state is also still paying former Education Commissioner Eric Smith his $275,000 a year salary. Smith left In June but he has been getting a paycheck due to unused leave.
