Lee County Public Schools is proud to announce that Veterans Park Academy for the Arts, Island Coast High School and Oak Hammock Middle School have been notified that they are among the finalists in the SunSmart E-shelter Schools program.
The schools are now scheduled to have a site visit by the program’s engineering and emergency management team to confirm site suitability. It is anticipated that the schools will be approved and fully accepted into the program. Each of these schools is designated an emergency shelter for Lee County, which qualified them for participation in this program.
The grant will provide a 10,000 watt solar array with battery back-up installed on each school campus. This system will feature a battery back-up that provides power to critical loads in the emergency shelter in the event of an electrical power outage. Along with the solar array, this program provides numerous other aspects of the program, such as teacher training and access to energy information about the school.
Once the schools are formally approved, the University of Central Florida will work with each school during the selection process to pick contractor to install the system.
