NEW YORK (AP) - Mary Campbell, who covered music and theater for four decades at The Associated Press, has died. She was 78.
Her sister, Ruth Miller, said Campbell died Friday in Bloomington, Ind. Campbell wrote about performers ranging from Beverly Sills to the Dixie Chicks.
She was born in Mount Sterling, Ill., and attended the University of Illinois.
In 1960, she joined the AP in Chicago, then soon transferred to AP headquarters in New York.
She once said "I write for an ordinary person like me." She said her aim was not to be erudite, but to be enthusiastic and clear.
Campbell retired in 2000.
