ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Medicaid costs continue to rise in New York state. Officials say the health care program for the poor and disabled spent $41.4 billion for the state fiscal year that ended March 31. That's up 26 percent from the $32.8 billion spent four years ago.
NEW YORK (AP) - A new poll finds that 47 percent of New Yorkers say they are worse off financially than they were four years ago, compared to 37 percent who say their finances have improved. The Siena College poll also found that 68 percent of New York state residents support raising the federal income tax for high earners.
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - A Syracuse firefighter has been arrested on fraud charges in a scam where $38,000 worth of Home Depot goods were stolen and later returned in exchange for gift cards. Lotan Mitchell has been charged with grand larceny and falsifying business records, according to The Post-Standard of Syracuse. Three others also were arrested and charged.
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - The Buffalo Zoo's male polar bear is headed out of town while the zoo builds a new exhibit. The zoo has going-away events planned throughout the weekend for the big bear, named Nanuq. Construction of the new Arctic Edge exhibit isn't scheduled to begin until spring, but the bear is being sent to the Columbus Zoo now so that he can be acclimated to the new habitat in time for the next breeding season.
