KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Jamaican dancehall star Bounty Killer has been denied bail while he awaits trial on charges of assaulting his girlfriend.

The rapper is alleged to have struck the woman because she wanted to break up with him.

Police said Wednesday in a statement that he later threatened her in a phone call placed while in custody.

His attorney Thomas Tavares-Finson could not be reached for comment. A trial is scheduled for April 14.

Bounty Killer is best known for the album "My Xperience" and his collaboration on the song "Hey Baby" with U.S. pop band No Doubt.

Known offstage as Rodney Price, he has had frequent run-ins with the law. His most recent arrest came Monday.
