PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - WINK News Call For Action has uncovered new details about the man Sheriff's Deputies say shot and killed Sgt. Michael Wilson last month.
Jaroslav Vanko first came to the US in 1999 as part of a Diversity Program Visa. After working as a cook a restaurants in Key West, he moved to Sarasota County.
Vanko, who is originally from Slovakia, became a naturalized citizen in December of 2005. That's when he legally changed his first name to Jay.
WINK News Call For Action also obtained Vanko's military record from his home country. He served in the army for about five months in 1984.
Vanko owned at least two businesses, a landscaping operation and a computer business.
But he had major financial issues and declared bankruptcy in 2011.
