LEE COUNTY, Fla.- Hertz has cleared its first hurdle in getting government bodies to approve the headquarters in Estero. The Southwest Florida Regional Planning Council voted to approve the 300,000 square foot building.

The council staff noted the headquarters and its 700 employees would not make a "substantial impact" on the traffic on US 41, or on other aspects of quality of life. The council had to take action, because the headquarters will be located in the Coconut Point regional development area.

The Hertz proposal is supposed to go before a Lee County hearing examiner, next week. The auto rental giant hopes to open the new headquarters in early 2015.
