PUNTA GORDA Fla.- It's a plan that's literally taking off. Today, Allegiant Air announced more choices for passengers. Starting June 27th the carrier will start offering service from Punta Gorda to Peoria Illinois, South Bend and Fort Wayne Indiana and Niagra Falls New York.

Allegiant did confirm that the four new destinations were chosen because of their proximity to destinations that were abandoned when the now defunct Direct Air shut down earlier this year. Allegiant spokesman Eric Fletcher also told us that because of the expansion it will also open a base of operations at the Punta Gorda Airport.

"We chose Punta Gorda as our ninth base of operations because we see a community that lots of people want to come to", said Fletcher.

Having that base of operations could mean more jobs for this growing airport. City Council member Harvey Goldberg called the announcement a shot in the arm for the county and pointed out that other airlineas should take notice that Punta Gorda is a good place to do business adding: "That this is a destination and they should come look at Punta Gorda and Charlotte County". The new flights will start at about $75.
