RISING HOPES: Stocks rose moderately as investors bet the Federal Reserve will restart some economic stimulus programs. The gain came a day before the Fed's monetary policy meeting.

NOT EVERYONE WAS OPTMISTIC: New York Stock Exchange volume was its lowest of the year because many investors are out of the market. They don't have a sense of where the economy is going and they're not making any big moves.

NUMBERS: The Dow Jones industrial average rose 45.19 to 10,698.75, wiping out a 21-point loss from Friday. That drop followed the government's disappointing July jobs report.
