North Port man accused of DUI Manslaughter in fatal crash

A man found to be drunk behind the wheel faces charges for a fatal crash that killed a woman.

Florida Highway Patrol arrested Nicalos Simpson, 26, of North Port after responding to a fatal crash that killed Petruska E. Marquez, 63, of Lehigh Acres on I-75 near State Road 72 in Sarasota County early Sunday morning.

According to the FHP press release, Simpson was stopped in a 2016 Chrysler 200 southbound on I-75 near SR-72 (Clark Road) in the center lane. Christopher Marquez, 30, and Petruska were traveling southbound I-75 in the center lane near SR-72 in a 2007 Nissan Sentra, with Christopher in the driver’s seat.

According to FHP, Christopher failed to stop the car in time to see the Chrysler stopped in the center lane of the interstate, causing the front of the Nissan to crash into the back of the Chrysler.

Petruska was taken to Doctors Hospital of Sarasota where she was pronounced dead. Christopher was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital to treat serious injuries. His status is unknown at this time.

According to FHP, Simpson was found to be under the influence of alcohol while he was behind the wheel of the car and was arrested by FHP.

Simpson faces charges for Disabled Vehicle Obstructing Traffic, DUI Manslaughter, DUI Serious Bodily Injury and DUI Property Damage.
