Car crashes into Fort Myers Payless

Law enforcement is searching person that drove their car into a Payless ShoeSource store in Fort Myers late Monday night.

The incident took place at the store on Cleveland and Jefferson Avenue, just north of Winkler Avenue.

A witness said they saw the car speeding up right before it slammed into the store, and following the crash he saw a person running from the scene.

“My first thought was I hope nobody got seriously hurt, but the other would have been if they came from that side of the street, they were traveling pretty hard and it would have been very frightening to have been near here,” said Doug Meske, who witnessed the crash.

Crews spent the day working to fix part of the building, but for now an orange notice on the front reads, “Building is unsafe.”

It is unclear whether the store will re-open it’s doors with the recent announcement of all Payless Shoe stores closing in the near future.
