United Way to hold free ‘Taxathon’ event for low-income individuals, household

The United Way of Lee, Hendry, Glades, and Okeechobee launches tax season with 12-hour free tax prep and filing to result in taxpayers claiming Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Care Credits.

United Way holds tax preparation “Taxathon” at peak of tax season for low-income individuals and families with household incomes of $66,000 or less as part of our mission to bring back the financial stability of our community. While IRS trained volunteers provide free tax preparation, clients can visit a variety of agencies that will offer credit, job search, and with agencies and vendors such as Goodwill Job-link, Suncoast Credit Union, Florida Legal Aid, United Way 211, and more.

WHEN: Friday, February 8

8:45 a.m. – 8:59 a.m. – Program including countdown to Taxathon with leaders from United Way of Lee, Hendry, Glades, and Okeechobee Counties, along with volunteers and tax filers.

9:00 a.m. Friday – 9:00 p.m. – Taxathon kick off – Volunteer tax preparers work for 12 hours

Last year, 5,000 individuals and families were able to utilize the earned income tax credit and other available credits through the United Way VITA FREE tax preparation resulting in $6.7 million coming back to our five-county region and saving an average of $250 per family in tax preparation fees.
