The Florida Highway Patrol confirm two people have died in a crash on State Road 31 at Bermont Road in Punta Gorda.

On Thursday morning, James Garnett, 77, with passenger Daisy Garnett, 78, was driving a Kia Soul east on Bermont Road towards the SR-31 intersection, approaching a flashing red light signal. Pedro Dominguez, 54, was driving a Peterbilt 379 south on SR-31 as he neared a flashing yellow light signal at the same intersection.

The Kia violated the Peterbilt’s right of way as it traveled into the intersection, the FHP press release states. The front portion of the Peterbilt propelled into the left side of the Kia.

The force of the impact pushed the Kia off the roadway, where it landed in a ditch filled with water. James and Daisy Garnett were pronounced dead on the scene.

Dominguez, the driver of the Peterbilt, was not injured from the crash.

All lanes are back open on SR 31 after being shut down due to the crash.
