Opening statements were presented in the trial for three people accused of stealing tax dollars at the U.S. District Court in Fort Myers Tuesday afternoon.

The three people behind VR Labs promised that their vitamin drink business would bring hundreds of high paying jobs to Lee County. It was awarded a grant in 2010 by the county, but the justice department said those jobs never came.

A jury of 15 has been seated in the federal case against Kay and Robert Gow, along with their longtime friend John G. Williams.

In opening statements, prosecutors said the Gows used taxpayer money to acquire their luxury vehicles, homes and credit cards. But the defense said their clients are innocent.
