Dave Hunt has lived in Golden Gate for 35 years. He bought his house because his backyard is the golf course.

“I love being on the 13th tee,” Hunt said. “This is what I’ve been paying taxes on and I’m taxed more than anybody over there because I’m on the golf course.”

Now, Collier County commissioners are negotiating a deal to purchase this 167-acre property. They are mulling over the many possibilities for this land.

Several commissioners said this is the perfect spot to build a Veteran Affairs hospital. Don Setterquist, who lives down the road says he wants the course to stay, too.

“We love it out here,” Setterquist said. “It’s a nice community. My dog loves it. He’s got how many golf balls, 200?”

County leaders mentioned the possibility of workforce housing as well. But, they promise to meet the needs of Hunt and Setterquist — whatever direction they go.

Commissioners said a green space with beautiful landscaping would be put in as a buffer between their homes and the redevelopment.

Commissioners said regardless of what ends up there, it will not drag down Hunt and Setterquist’s property values.
