Fort Myers Community Cooperative looking for volunteers to feed those in need

Published: Updated:

While Black Friday shoppers navigated the stores today, another crowd lined up outside the Community Cooperative waiting for a hot meal.

Johnnie Wright was born and raised in Fort Myers, and after spending four years in the army serving his country, he is being served by volunteers who are giving up their Black Friday to help their neighbors.

“It means a lot. It means they care about the people,” he said.

Today, more than 40 people lined up outside the door to get a good meal at the Fort Myers Community Cooperative Soup Kitchen.

“It’s actually fulfilling to be here,” said Alexis Goss who spent the day volunteering.

She’s spending the day showing her kids that this time of year it’s not all about saving money at the store.

“I wanted them to be able to see the people who are in need and help them and give back to the community,” Goss said.

It’s a lesson that her son Tyler is learning firsthand at the community cooperative.

“I wanted to come and support them, because some people don’t have food on the table,” he said.

And their kitchen manager, Renee Worthington says they need help from people like you year-round, not just during the holidays.

“We’re very thankful that we are here,” Worthington said.

And thankful to help those who are glad this service exists in the first place.

The Community Cooperative is open 6:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. Monday through Friday on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Fort Myers.
