One Cape Coral grandmother is counting her blessings this Thanksgiving after making a cross-country trek with her adult son to pick up their loved ones who were fleeing from the Camp Fire in California.

“So I walk outside and right across the street, it’s in flames,” said Kayla Snow whose family ran as their town burned up. “I yelled at my mom, get dressed we need to leave now,” she said.

She covered her four-year-old daughter’s mouth from the smoke.

“There were people getting out of their cars and running and we were just crying and hoping to make it out,” she said.

And hoping that her two older daughters at school somehow were able to escape.

10-year-old Lyndsey says she remembers the flames.

“People after us who were on the road said the fire was coming in on both sides,” she said.

And seven-year-old Zoey remembers her fear.

“We were actually super scared,” she said. “We weren’t with our mother.”

Their dad Jason was miles away in Alabama and said he was freaking out until he got confirmation that his kids made it out safe.

Jason and his mom from Cape Coral drove 38 hours straight once they heard the news that their loved ones were alive, and they are lucky.

Their home, a car, and a community were wiped away in the ash, but tonight, they are gathered and celebrating Thanksgiving in Cape Coral.

“We’re a lot luckier than a lot of people.”

And they are thankful for each loved one at the table.

“You can’t be miserable about what you lost, all you can do is be happy about what you still got,” Jason said.

The family has a fundraiser set up, you can find it here.
