Fort Myers Fire Department Captain Michael Deke saved a man from a burning building without saying a word.

Earlier Wednesday morning, a call came in for a fire at the Windsor Apartments near Edison Mall.

Neighbors say the smoke was billowing from the corner apartment, and that it looked like it was a kitchen fire.

But what impressed the whole neighborhood was how fast Capt. Deke jumped into action to save one of their own.

Capt. Deke helped a deaf neighbor escape his apartment by communicating with him through sign language because he couldn’t hear the fire alarm.

Neighbors say he was OK after the fire, just a little shaken up from it.

“I was impressed. I was. It’s nice to know that we have people out there who through any situation can actually deal with the people who are in distressed. And this gentleman was in distress and someone helped him,” said resident Todd Richards.

Richards says everyone at the Windsor Apartments knows the man that was rescued. He says last Thanksgiving, he went to a 7-Eleven not far from the apartments and bought a bunch of 12-inch sandwiches for everyone.

The City of Fort Myers posted a video of Capt. Deke communicating with the resident on Facebook:
