FGCU volleyball made its third straight appearance in the ASUN Volleyball Championship and made history. The Eagles traveled to Georgia to claim victory.

FGCU volleyball beat Kennesaw State to win the 2018 ASUN Volleyball Championship Saturday.

In a battle of the birds, the Eagles defeated the Owls at the KSU Convocation Center for their first title and first trip to the NCAA tournament.

The championship was decided in 5 sets, as the Eagles and the Owls were tied at 2 sets apiece. The Eagles were up by 2 points, 14-12, one point away from a win when they grabbed the needed point off an Owls miss.

“I’m so proud of my team,” said Daniele Serrano, who was awarded MVP. “It was a roller coaster of emotions.”

Head Coach Matt Botsford has been with the program through its wins and losses, and this is a moment he has looked forward to for the Eagles.

“This is amazing,” Botsford said. “And the most amazing thing about it is I’ve waited five years, and it’s wanting to see this reaction right hear — from these players and our first recruiting class going out as seniors doing something that no group has done with our program.”
