One person was killed and four people were injured in a crash Tuesday afternoon on State Road 29, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. The crash happened around 3:22 p.m. at the intersection of State Road 29 and State Road 78, according to the FHP. The road has since cleared. The driver of the Ford F-350 sustained critical injuries and his passengers were seriously injured, State troopers said. They were taken to Lee Memorial and Tampa General hospitals. A black BMW X5 SUV was traveling southbound on State Road 29 approaching State Road 78, according to State troopers. A Ford F-350 truck was traveling northbound on State Road 29, just north of State Road 78. The BMW crossed the northbound lane and rotated counterclockwise, State troopers said. The Ford then collided with the BMW. Following the collision, both vehicles came to rest on the east grass shoulder of State Road 29, according to State troopers. The driver of the BMW was killed in the crash, but the identity of the victim is unclear pending the notification of next-of-kin. Trust WINK News for more information as details become available.
