Callers pose as FPL, ask for money

Published: Updated:

NAPLES, Fla. A phony company is posing as Florida Power and Light.

A woman is out more than $700 after someone calling from a fake FPL phone number told her she would have to send the money or have her power cut off.

She received calls from three numbers, one of which gives a professional-sounding recorded message whenever someone calls it back.

“Welcome to FPL,” the recording says. “For residential, press 1. Business, press 2. Para espanol, marque tres.”

The woman transferred money to the impersonators by reading the pin number from a MoneyPak card — a type of prepaid debit card she bought at a CVS.

She was told to send another $700, but she became suspicious when the CVS clerk selling her another MoneyPak suggested she might be getting taken advantage of. The woman called police when she spoke with the impersonators again and was asked for her bank number.

Keep ahead of fraud with this list of active scams from the Federal Trade Commission.
