CAPE CORAL, Fla. A woman suffered life-threatening injuries Monday in a crash that sent a car into a canal, police said.

One of the two cars involved went through two vacant lots before plunging into the canal near Savona Parkway and Chiquita Boulevard, according to police.

Home surveillance footage shows the car flying into the Cape Coral canal and a neighbor that jumped in to help.

“He jumped in, he had a knife and a hammer, and he swam over to the car,” said Mark Bouren. “Took about three or four minutes, he busted out the windows and pulled them out. He’s the hero.”

Bouren said it was chilling looking back at his security footage.

More witnesses are seen in the video jumping in to help.

“They ran around the back side of my house toward the canal, and the one gal jumped in the water to save the person who was injured,” said George Stapp.

Neighbors and witnesses say it took about five minutes to get the driver pulled out of the vehicle.

“It was scary, and I’m just thankful that she’s OK and that everything turned out,” Bouren said.

The injured driver was taken to Health Park in south Fort Myers.
