Puerto Ricans make new homes in Florida after Maria

NAPLES, Fla. Its been two weeks since Luis Ortega evacuated Puerto Rico after surviving Hurricane Irma and Maria.

About 95 percent of the island remains without power and it’s not expected to be restored until December.

WINK News reporter Hannah Vogel explains what’s happening right now through the eyes of someone forced to leave their home.

Ortega is not alone. More than 175,000 Puerto Ricans are expected to pour into Florida. WINK News reporter John-Carlos Estrada spoke with North Port resident Remy Cruz, whose grandparents now live with her after fleeing.
