Crew begins search for toxins at Dunbar sludge site

Published: Updated:

FORT MYERS, Fla. Tests designed to show whether toxins remain at a former dump site in Dunbar began Wednesday.

A crew from GFA International Inc., a geology firm, was at the block of land near homes where the city disposed of sludge from a water treatment plant for decades.

Arsenic was discovered at the site in 2007, and it was still present in the groundwater as recently as 2012.

Preliminary testing took place in August, but that work, done with a ground-penetrating radar, won’t produce evidence on what toxins may still be in the soil there. It’ll only give insight on the depth of the soil and any objects in it.

It will be weeks before results come back from this week’s testing, which was originally to take place in September. Hurricane Irma forced its postponement.
