FORT MYERS, Fla. Rollout of a new driver’s license design is beginning in earnest.

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles is expanding the number of service centers handing out licenses with the new design this month, the department said in a press release. The change will be in effect at all centers across the state in December.

The new licenses are designed to increase fraud protection and security, though critics say the gradual way the state is rolling them out runs counter to those efforts.

Centers in Lee, Volusia, Okaloosa, Leon, Duval, Brevard, Manatee and Broward counties were the first to get the new licenses.
