Payment deadlines extended for Cape utilities project

CAPE CORAL, Fla. Homeowners on the north side of the city will get extra time to pay for the next phase of a massive utilities project.

The city has extended the initial prepayment period for the next phase of its Utilities Extension Project from Sept. 30 to Oct. 31 because of Hurricane Irma, spokeswoman Connie Barron said.

A second prepayment period will now begin Nov. 1 and continue through July 31, 2018.  Property owners can still prepay during that time, but interest costs would be added, Barron said.

The cost without interest is $18,032 to each homeowner in the zone where the next phase is taking place (see map below).

Homeowners who wait until after July 31 next year will have payments tacked onto their property taxes for the next 20 years. For them, the cost will be $32,338, Barron said.
