Irma damages Chokoloskee bridge

CHOKOLOSKEE, Fla. Hurricane Irma battered the only bridge connecting Chokoloskee to the mainland.

The bridge on Smallwood Drive remained shut down Monday night, the Collier County Sheriff’s Office said.

Those who stayed behind on the south Collier County island are stranded there with limited food and water, resident Houston Brown Jr. said.

Some ferries run, the sheriff’s office, and the bridge can be walked across carefully, Brown said, but there’s no way to drive off the island.
