Sexual assault reported at FGCU

FORT MYERS, Fla. A sexual assault was reported on the Florida Gulf Coast University campus, university spokeswoman Susan Evans said.

It involves people who know each other, and no threat to the campus at large exists, Evans said.

The University Police Department was first notified of the assault on July 7, according to the police report. The victim agreed to give a taped statement and was later taken to a sexual examination facility.

It is unclear if a suspect is in custody.

“It makes me sick to my stomach, honestly. That sounds so awful and I hope no one else has to go through that and I pray for the person that it happened to,” freshman student Anna Dompierre said.

This sexual assault marks the third within the last year.

A woman reported she was sexually assaulted in January by two men in a North Lake Village parking lot, according to a press release.

Another sexual assault was reported in August, according to FGCU Police & Safety. The woman was in a stairwell at Siedler Hall when a man confronted her, but she was able to run away.

FGCU is required to publish a campus security and safety report online, but the 2016-2017 report has not been posted.

The university had six forcible sexual offenses reported for the 2015-2016 school year and all of them were classified as fondling. Three rapes were reported in 2013 and 2014.

The current investigation is ongoing.
