Cape condo pool where kids drowned deemed unsafe

CAPE CORAL, Fla. The pool where two children drowned this week is unsafe, city officials say.

Signs were posted Thursday as a warning to the property representatives of the condominium building on the 1000 block of Southwest 47th Terrace. A 3-year-old boy and a 1-year-old girl fell into a pool there Monday night.

Their father, Eric Merchant Sr., told police he discovered the children motionless in the pool after returning from the bathroom and said he didn’t know how they got in there. The children were rushed to Cape Coral Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

The city told the property reps Tuesday that they had 48 hours to install a barrier around the pool. That barrier still wasn’t there Thursday, when the note, which threatens a possible evacuation order, was posted.
