FORT MYERS, Fla. A fire is burning on three stories of the Westchase Apartments, a resident said Monday evening.

Flames are inside the walls of the building on 3810 Metro Parkway where some 50 people live, the resident said. A dozen units were left uninhabitable, but no one was hurt, a source said.

Multiple firefighting crews went to the scene. Britney Lubin, a 10-year-old girl who lives at the apartments, was the first to spot the fire and call 911, one of her neighbors said.

“If we didn’t have a phone, what would we do?” Lubin said.

Lubin was headed to the mailbox when she first smelled smoke and figured someone was grilling. She noticed smoke emanating from the roof on her way out.

“Thank goodness she was there because I was just minding my business,” neighbor Pearl Narcisse said.

Britney and Narcisse live in a building across from the one that burned.

The cause of the fire is unclear.
