NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. A 30-year-old man was killed in a crash Monday night on U.S. 41, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The wreck took place shortly after 9 p.m. on U.S. 41 and Betmar Boulevard near a Sunoco gas station, the FHP said.

Jeremy Michael Freeman, of Fort Myers, was driving a 2007 Hyundai Veracruz northbound on U.S. 41 approaching Betmar Boulevard, the FHP said. Freeman was changing lanes when his passenger side tires left the paved portion of the roadway and entered the northbound shoulder.

Freeman, who was not wearing a seat belt, lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a traffic sign, crossed both lanes of Betmar Boulevard and ran into a light pole, the FHP said. He then crashed into the back of an unoccupied car parked at a Sunoco gas station where his car overturned, the FHP said.

Freeman was pronounced dead at the scene, the FHP said. His 11-year-old daughter, who was also not wearing a seat belt, was in the car at the time of the crash and was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital with minor injuries, the FHP said.

It is unclear if Freeman had alcohol in his system, the FHP said.
