Heavy mosquito larvae population found in downtown Naples

Published: Updated:

NAPLES, Fla. Downtown Naples has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

The Collier Mosquito Control District detected high populations of mosquito larvae along Fifth Avenue South, Third Street South and surrounding areas, the district said via Facebook.

The district will treat the area with VectoBac Bti larvicide using a Buffalo Turbine truck after 4:30 a.m. Wednesday. That larvicide is made from bacteria rather than chemicals, according to a fact sheet from its maker.

Mosquitoes became a focus of greater than usual concern last year as the mosquito-borne Zika virus spread throughout Florida.

The only reported cases in Collier County were travel-related, and no Zika-carrying mosquitoes were found there.
