SAN CARLOS PARK, Fla. A 21-year-old Bonita Springs man has died from injuries he suffered in an early Friday morning crash, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Jose Argueta Sanchez was pronounced dead at Lee Memorial Hospital after the Honda Accord he was driving entered the path of an oncoming freightliner at U.S. 41 and Sanibel Boulevard, the FHP said Sunday.

Sanchez’s passenger, 20-year-old Chase D. Matters, was also taken to Lee Memorial in critical condition, the FHP said. He was placed in a medically induced coma, his aunt, Jenna Alexander, said Sunday.

Matters is also from Bonita Springs, Alexander said, though FHP listed Greenville, Pennsylvania, as his home.

Alcohol was a factor for Sanchez, the FHP said.

Daniel Del Castillo, 46, of Miami, told investigators he had a steady green light as he drove on U.S. 41 approaching the intersection at about 1:43 a.m., the FHP said. Neither Castillo nor his passenger was hurt.

The Honda was traveling on Sanibel Boulevard and crossed into U.S. 41, the FHP said.

The FHP continues to investigate.
