PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. Fish are dying by the hundreds as once-plentiful water dries in a Kiwanis Park pond. “Now it’s just nothing,” parkgoer Tony Mangia said. “It’s barely just a puddle.” The severe drought affecting Charlotte County and much of the rest of Southwest Florida for weeks has led to the demise of the pond and the fish inside it. Birds of prey lurk in their place. “Vultures, buzzards, seabirds, eagles and hawks,” Mangia said, “and they were all battling for the dead fish.”
