NEWARK, N.J. After going nearly two weeks without a win, the FGCU baseball team snapped its six-game losing streak with a 7-5 victory over the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Game 1 of  the three-game conference series Friday night.

The win marks the Eagles’ first win in extra innings this season.

After falling behind 2-0 on a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth, the Eagles scored three runs in the top of the fifth.

Freshman Richie Garcia drove in the first run with an RBI single to center. Junior Eli Lovell then loaded the bases with a walk before redshirt junior Gage Morey hit a sacrifice fly to give the Eagles a 3-2 lead.

NJIT responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth, regaining the lead 4-2.

However, FGCU was able to tie the game 4-4 at the top of the seventh when Lovell drove in his second run of the game on a single to left field.

NJIT then reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the eighth after a bases-loaded walk.

But the Eagles went on to tie the game in the top of the ninth with an RBI single from Morey, forcing the game into extra innings.

Garcia then drove in the game-winning run with an RBI single in the top of the 10th, while Lovell drove in an extra run with a sacrifice fly to right field, sealing the 7-5 win.

The two teams will face off for Game 2 Saturday at 1 p.m.
