Decision coming on Cape Coral speed limit reduction

Published: Updated:

CAPE CORAL, Fla. It’s a small victory for residents behind Coralwood Mall who’ve watched cars zip past their homes.

City Council will vote next Monday on lowering the speed limit on Southeast 17th Place from 30 mph to 25 mph.

Perri Tyler and her neighbors have been pushing for the change for nearly a year, as motorists frequently use the road as a cut-through between Veterans and Four Mile Cove parkways to avoid traffic.

“We have a high volume of cars and always a certain percentage of them speed,” Tyler said. “It’s dangerous. This road is residential, there’s homes on both sides, and it’s narrow.”

In an effort to deter speeding, the city recently installed solar-powered electronic speed limit signs that flash red when motorists are driving too fast.

But Tyler said the signs haven’t made much of a difference. And even if the council knocks the speed limit down by 5 mph, more change is needed, Tyler believes.

“What really needs to happen is a traffic calming policy where they divert traffic from residential to the commercial area,” she said.
