SOUTH FORT MYERS, Fla. The latest phase of a $2.7 billion statewide project designed to fortify power poles against hurricanes began Thursday in Lee County.

Florida Power and Light is replacing wooden poles with 55-foot concrete poles. The new poles are designed to withstand winds of up to 145 mph, the company said.

The initial phases of the project began in 2006, the company said.

The Lee County phase will take four to six months to complete, the company said.
