‘Cowbell’ fire 75 percent contained

IMMOKALEE, Fla. The brush fire burning in the Big Cypress National Preserve has charred an estimated 21,742 acres and is 75 percent contained, the National Park Service said.

No injuries have been reported since the blaze began burning March 30.

The following areas remain closed while crews work to extinguish the flames:
  • Pink Jeep, Bear Island and Gator Head campgrounds
  • The road leading into the Sanctuary with the exception of residents
  • All trails between State Road 29, L-28 Canal and north of Interstate 75, including that section of the Florida Trail
  • All public lands west of the L-28 Canal, north of Alligator Alley and east of State Road 29
