ATV sparked Lehigh Acres brush fire

Published: Updated:

LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. The 11-acre brush fire that threatened homes Sunday evening was caused by an ATV, the Florida Forest Service said.

The blaze began just before 6 p.m. near the intersection of West 16th Street and Rush Avenue, according to the Lee County Public Safety website.

No homes were destroyed as a result of the flames, but some residents tried to extinguish the blaze themselves while waiting for crews to arrive.

It’s unclear who was driving the ATV that started the fire or whether charges will be filed if that person is identified and caught.

Residents applauded the firefighters’ efforts from various Southwest Florida agencies to successfully contain the flames. Crews will continue to monitor any hotspots in the area Monday.

No further information was immediately available.
