FORT MYERS, Fla. The FGCU baseball team lost to the University of South Carolina Upstate 3-1 at Swanson Stadium Friday night. The Spartans immediately gained an early lead in the top of the first inning after scoring on a bad throw from junior shortstop Julio Gonzalez. The game remained scoreless until the top of the fifth when the Spartans added another run to the scoreboard with a single to left field, making it a 2-0 ballgame. The Eagles scored their first run in the bottom of the seventh with two back-to-back, two-out singles from freshmen Richie Garcia and Alex Brait, narrowing the Spartans’ lead 2-1. However, the Spartans extended their lead in the top of the ninth with a solo home run over the left field fence from Russ Schwertfeger, sealing the team’s 3-1 victory. The Eagles and Spartans will face off in the series finally Saturday at Swanson Stadium at noon.
