Brush fire contained after threatening North Fort Myers homes

Published: Updated:

NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. A brush fire threatened multiple structures Monday afternoon near Gish Lane and Heck Drive in Suncoast Estates, the Bayshore Fire Protection and Rescue Service District said.

Some of the structures are homes, and flames could be seen within feet of a trailer at 1731 Case Lane. It’s unclear exactly how many buildings were threatened, but none have been damaged and no one is hurt.

The fire encompassed 70 acres and was 100 percent contained as of 6 p.m., the Florida Forest Service said at 6 p.m. Containment refers to the fire’s ability to spread and doesn’t necessarily mean the fire is extinguished.

The blaze forced the closure of Del Prado Boulevard at Barbie Lane in both directions. The road reopened shortly after 6 p.m.

The cause of the blaze is unknown, but some nearby residents believe it was intentionally set.

No evacuations were ordered, but some residents left voluntarily.

Smoke could be seen from the WINK News Tower Cam in downtown Fort Myers.
