ENGLEWOOD, Fla. A 36-year-old man was hospitalized Friday night after he was shot by a Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office deputy.

Deputies responded to a domestic disturbance call on the 6400 block of Hamlet Drive at about 8:30 p.m. A woman called 911 and stated that there was a male in her home who assaulted her, was suicidal and had a weapon, the sheriff’s office said.

Shots were fired after a confrontation ensued, the sheriff’s office said.

Casey Roberts, who is a former Charlotte County deputy, was treated for a non-life threatening gunshot wound and is expected to survive. Roberts was in the “custody, care and control” of the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office on Sunday morning, sheriff’s office spokesperson Skip Conroy said.

Sheriff Bill Prummell will be holding a press conference addressing the shooting Monday at the sheriff’s office at 11:00 a.m.
