Lee County officials urge homeowners to conserve water

Published: Updated:

CAPE CORAL, Fla. Lee County officials are thinking about declaring an official water shortage as Southwest Florida deals with a moderate drought.

Officials issued a release Thursday reminding homeowners living in unincorporated areas that they need to conserve water. The South Florida Water Management District is coordinating with the county to monitor water level conditions.

If homeowners don’t comply and the irrigation water supply gets too low, the county could implement mandatory restrictions.

There several ways to conserve water:

Tips from Lee County

Inside the home

    • Check the toilet tank for leaks.
    • Only run automatic dishwashers when there is a full load or set the water level to the appropriate size load.
    • Remember to use extra water for watering plants, or cleaning instead of pouring it down the drain.

Outside the home

    • To reduce evaporation loss, water lawns during early morning hours when temperatures and wind speed are lowest.
    • Lawns only need watered every 5-7 days during the summer and 10-14 days during the winter.
    • Use compost to help maintain moisture in the soil.
    • Use a broom to clean driveways, sidewalks or any other type of pavements instead of water.
