Trash left on Fort Myers Beach prompts reaction, solutions

FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. Trash along the shore is sparking a mixed reaction as spring break gets underway for many.

Eric O’Gilvie, owner of Wicked Wings at 61 Avenue C, feels the need to keep the area clean and trash-free.

“It’s about keeping the beach looking really good and taking care of it,” O’Gilvie said. “It’s our playground.”

Locals and tourists alike feel it’s important to maintain the beach.

“It’s sad, they just leave their trash in such a beautiful area,” spring breaker Ronnie Bendurski said. “People should clean up after themselves as common courtesy.”

Both Bendurski and O’Gilvie agree the amount of trash is directly related to the number of beachgoers soaking up the sun on Fort Myers Beach.

“It’s understandably messy. There are more people here and there is going to be some trash,” Bendurski said.

While some beachgoers expressed frustration with the litter, others, like spring breaker Billy Bingham, take action.

“We bring bags for trash, and we make sure people are cleaning up behind us, Bingham said. “We got it covered.”
