FGCU women’s hoops to play Miami in NCAA Tournament

FORT MYERS, Fla. FGCU got another in-state matchup Monday.

The Florida Gulf Coast University women’s basketball team will play Miami at 4 p.m. Saturday in Coral Gables in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the selection committee announced Monday evening.

The Eagles drew a 13 seed. Miami is the No. 4 seed in the Stockton Region.

FGCU clinched its bid with a 77-70 win Sunday against Stetson in the Atlantic Sun Conference final.

The men’s basketball team, a 14 seed, will take on Florida State University, a 3 seed, on Thursday in Orlando in the first round of the men’s tournament. It’s the first time since the programs joined Division I that the men’s and women’s teams have both qualified for the NCAAs in the same season.

The success bodes well for all of FGCU sports, which stand to benefit from the notoriety, Athletics Director Ken Kavanagh said.

“Last year, we had recruits from 33 different states and 25 different countries,” Kavanagh said. “It’s pretty unique — not only a good thing for our athletics but the school as a whole.”

It all adds up to an electric atmosphere among students on campus, as WINK News reporter Britni McDonald details:
