Collier man killed after crashing into canal

NAPLES, Fla. A 42-year-old man’s life was cut short after an early morning crash Friday, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The crash occurred just before 4 a.m. Michael Kampe, of Naples, was speeding down on 58th Avenue Northeast, which is a dead-end road, in his Toyota Corolla.

For unknown reasons, Kampe couldn’t stop at the end of the road, hit a dirt pile, went airborne and crashed into the canal, the FHP said.

Several neighbors and deputies pulled Kampe out of the car and performed CPR, but to no avail.

The crash in under investigation.

It’s the seventh straight day someone has died on Southwest Florida roads. One woman died Thursday from injuries she sustained from a crash in Charlotte County last week. At least one person was killed Thursday in a crash near mile marker 64 on Interstate 75. One person was killed Sunday in Charlotte County, and a pedestrian died Monday in Lehigh Acres. Two pedestrians were hit and killed Tuesday — one in Arcadia and the other in Englewood. A passenger was killed in a four-car wreck Wednesday in Golden Gate Estates.
