Lee County neighborhood fed up with speeding dump trucks

SOUTH FORT MYERS, Fla. Dozens of dump trucks have sped down Hendry Creek Drive every day for the past week, much to the frustration of residents.

“There are probably 250 trucks that go through here everyday, so that’s 500 trucks that pass my house everyday, in and out,” said neighbor Paula Brownlee, adding that she’s tried to have speed bumps installed.

It starts around 5 a.m., Brownlee said, and doesn’t end until sunset.

The trucks are hauling dirt to a nearby construction site, where two homes are being built and drivers have to pass by a bus stop.

“This is where the kids have to wait and it’s pretty exposed, so you really don’t want the trucks passing one another,” said Linda, a homeowner who chose not to reveal her last name.

Southwest Florida has seen a recent spike in deadly crashes involving dump trucks. Last month, a dump truck slammed into a man who ran a red light in Lehigh Acres.

In December, a woman died after she turned into the path of a dump truck in South Fort Myers.

Three more dump truck-related deaths were reported in September and October in Collier, DeSoto and Lee counties.
