IMMOKALEE, Fla. — A group of teachers started an initiative called the “Pillow Project” several weeks ago at Pinecrest Elementary School, one of the poorest schools in the state. “Not too long ago, one of my students came to me and gave me her teddy bear and said I could have it because she had a new one to sleep on,” said Dylan Opper, a science instructional coach. “… I asked her what she meant by sleeping on it and she told me she didn’t have a pillow, so she used a teddy bear.” Other students shared a pillow with their siblings, slept on a sweatshirt, or on their own arms. The teachers’ goal is to get each student a blanket, a sleeping bag, a pillow case and a pillow. They posted on Facebook using the hashtag #PCRPillowProject and raised over $2,000 within days.
