Caloosahatchee Bridge project wraps up early

FORT MYERS, Fla. — A bridge project that was supposed to take four nights is finished after only one.

Road closures on the Caloosahatchee Bridge that were scheduled to take place through Friday were canceled after crews finished Tuesday, the first night of work. The contractor for the project brought in extra help to finish the job quickly, Florida Department of Transportation spokeswoman JoAnn May said.

The work was to install overhead signs. The early completion alleviates immediate concern over existing signs that aren’t working. Those were put up years ago to direct drivers to alternate routes if either the Caloosahatchee or Edison bridges were to close.

Crews will return to the Caloosahatchee Bridge for further work next week, but it isn’t expected to require more than a single lane closure at a time.
